Tonehøjder

Tonehøjder refers to the perceived highness or lowness of a sound. It is a fundamental characteristic of musical pitches and speech. In acoustics, tonehøjder is primarily determined by the frequency of the sound wave, measured in Hertz (Hz). Higher frequencies correspond to higher pitches, while lower frequencies correspond to lower pitches. The human ear can perceive a wide range of frequencies, typically from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, though this range diminishes with age.

In music, tonehøjder are organized into scales and intervals, forming melodies and harmonies. Different cultures and musical traditions have developed distinct systems for organizing and naming these pitches. For example, the Western musical system uses a chromatic scale of twelve semitones within an octave, with common scales like major and minor.

Speech also utilizes tonehøjder, known as intonation, to convey meaning, emotion, and grammatical structure. Rising intonation often indicates a question, while falling intonation can signal the end of a statement. Changes in tonehøjder can differentiate between words that are otherwise spelled the same, as seen in tonal languages like Mandarin Chinese, where the meaning of a syllable can change entirely based on its pitch contour. The perception of tonehøjder is subjective and can be influenced by factors such as loudness and timbre.
