Tolerantolerane

Tolerantolerane is a neologism used in contemporary debates about tolerance and pluralism. It denotes a meta-tolerance: an overarching approach that seeks to balance the liberty to hold diverse views with the obligation to prevent harm, discrimination, or the erosion of rights. Proponents describe tolerantolerane as a framework for calibrating tolerance: it accepts a wide range of opinions and practices but draws principled lineaments where tolerance should stop, such as in cases of incitement, coercion, or the denial of basic rights to others. The idea is often discussed in relation to the paradox of tolerance, attributed to Karl Popper, which notes that unlimited tolerance can enable the tolerant to be destroyed by the intolerant; therefore, limits on tolerance are sometimes argued to be legitimate to preserve a free and open society.

Critics warn that the term can be vague and susceptible to misuse to suppress dissent or to justify censorship. They argue that criteria for drawing the line between permissible and impermissible tolerance must be clear, consistently applied, and rights-based rather than ideologically motivated. In practice, tolerantolerane influences debates in education policy, online platforms, and constitutional law, where questions arise about hate speech, harassment, and protection of minorities.
