Toledan

Toledan refers to anything related to Toledo, a historic city in central Spain, or to its inhabitants. In English usage, a person from Toledo can be described as a Toledan, and cultural or geographic items associated with the city may also carry the adjective.

In the history of astronomy, the term Toledan is most closely associated with the Toledan Tables, a set of astronomical tables compiled in Toledo during the 11th century. These tables were produced by the Toledan school of astronomers, including prominent figures such as Ibn al-Zarqālī (Azarquiel). The Toledan Tables organized and summarized knowledge of the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets, drawing on earlier Greek, Indian, and Arabic sources. They became a standard computational tool throughout medieval Europe for predicting celestial positions and calendrical calculations.

The Toledan Tables were influential beyond Toledo and laid the groundwork for later European work. In the 13th century, Alfonso X of Castile commissioned the Alfonsine Tables in Toledo, which built upon the methods and data of the Toledan tradition.
