Pneumatic actuators, similar to hydraulic ones, use compressed air as their working fluid. They are generally faster than hydraulic actuators and are often found in applications where cleanliness and speed are important, such as in manufacturing and robotics. Mechanical actuators derive their motion from mechanical components like levers, cams, or springs, often powered by another form of energy.

The primary function of an actuator is to translate a control signal into physical action. This signal can originate from a human operator, a sensor, or a programmable logic controller (PLC). The type of actuator chosen for a particular application depends on factors such as the required force, speed, precision, operating environment, and available power source. Actuators are essential in a vast array of applications, from simple valve operation and robotic arm movement to complex industrial processes and aerospace systems.
