The degree is earned across various fields, with common titles such as Filosofian tohtori (PhD), Tekniikan tohtorin tutkinto (Doctor of Science in Technology), and Lääketieteen tohtorin tutkinto (Doctor of Medicine). A doctoral dissertation can be a monograph or a compilation of peer‑reviewed articles accompanied by an integrating summary.

The dissertation is publicly defended in a väitöstilaisuus, where appointed opponents evaluate the work. Degree requirements and additional coursework–if any–vary by field and institution.
