Togarmah

Togarmah is a figure in the Hebrew Bible, listed as a son of Gomer, one of Japheth’s grandsons in the Table of Nations. In Genesis 10 and 1 Chronicles 1:6, Togarmah appears alongside Ashkenaz and Riphath as descendants of Gomer, a figure associated with the peoples of the ancient Near East.

In the prophetic book Ezekiel, Togarmah is referenced as the land of Beth Togarmah from the far north, involved in the coalitions described in Ezekiel 38–39. The exact location of Beth Togarmah is not certain, but most scholars identify it with a northern or northwestern territory corresponding to the Armenian highlands, eastern Anatolia, or the broader Caucasus region.

Historically, Togarmah has been linked in Jewish and Christian tradition to Armenia or to Turkic-speaking populations, though the biblical text provides only a geographical or ethnolinguistic marker rather than a precise modern nation. Over the centuries, various commentators have tied Togarmah to distinct peoples or regions, reflecting evolving geographic maps rather than a fixed identity.

In modern usage, Togarmah remains primarily a biblical ethnonym used in scholarly, religious, and historical discussions. It is often cited in discussions of the Table of Nations and the prophetic horizon of Gog and Magog, with no universally accepted identification.
