Tjäreprodukterna, Swedish for "tar products," refers to a category of substances derived from the destructive distillation of wood, primarily pine and birch, in a low-oxygen environment. This process, known as tar distillation or pyrolysis, yields a viscous, dark liquid rich in complex organic compounds. The primary and most well-known product is wood tar itself.

Wood tar has historically been valued for its preservative and water-repellent properties. It was extensively used in shipbuilding to protect wooden hulls from rot and marine organisms. Furthermore, it found applications in roofing, for treating ropes and nets, and even in traditional medicine for its antiseptic qualities. The characteristic smoky aroma of tar is also a familiar scent associated with historical industrial and maritime activities.

Beyond wood tar, the distillation process can yield other valuable byproducts. These may include pitch, a thicker residue used for caulking ships and waterproofing, and various volatile oils and creosote. The specific composition and yield of these products depend on the type of wood used, the temperature and duration of the distillation, and the method employed. While its industrial use has declined with the advent of synthetic alternatives, wood tar and its derivatives continue to be produced in smaller quantities for niche applications, historical reenactments, and artisanal purposes.
