Titleholder

Titleholder is a noun describing a person who currently holds a title, whether awarded, inherited, or acquired by appointment. The title may be ceremonial, honorary, official, or contractual, and the holder's status is typically defined by rules or law attached to the title.

In competitive contexts such as sports, boxing, wrestling, chess, or beauty pageants, the titleholder is the reigning champion or winner. The title generally remains in effect until the holder is defeated, loses the contest, or is stripped of the title for violating rules or conditions. In many cases the titleholder is required to perform duties, defend the title in scheduled defenses, and participate in promotional activities.

In other domains, the term also applies to the owner of property title in law, or to a person who bears a noble, academic, or official designation. In property law, the titleholder is the person who has legal ownership of real or personal property, capable of transferring it. In heraldry or nobility, current titleholders carry inherited or granted ranks, with succession rules determining who will become the next holder.

A titleholder may change due to successful defense, sale or transfer of the title, death, resignation, disqualification, or reallocation under governing rules. The term is a neutral descriptor used in documentation and reporting to identify the current holder of a specified title without implying merit beyond that status.
