Tippaaminen

Tippaaminen is a Finnish term that refers to the act of giving a tip or gratuity. In Finland, tipping is not a customary or expected practice in the same way it is in some other countries, such as the United States. Service staff in Finland are generally paid a living wage, and therefore, the concept of tipping is often seen as a bonus for exceptional service rather than a standard addition to the bill.

Despite not being obligatory, tipping does occur in Finland, particularly in situations where a customer feels a service has been outstanding. Common places where tipping might be considered include restaurants, cafes, taxis, and hair salons. If a customer chooses to tip, it is usually a small percentage of the total bill, often around 5-10%, or simply rounding up the amount to the nearest convenient sum. Many establishments in Finland do not have a specific place for tips on payment terminals, so cash is often preferred if a customer wishes to tip.

The general attitude towards tipping in Finland is that it is a gesture of appreciation for excellent service, rather than an expected part of the transaction. Service providers are not reliant on tips for their income. Therefore, a lack of tipping is not seen as an insult or a reflection of poor service. The decision to tip is entirely at the discretion of the customer.
