Tillpasning is the process of making something suitable for a particular purpose, environment, or user by adjusting its features, structure, or behavior. The noun is common in Swedish and Norwegian and is often used to describe fitting something to a context, though tillpasning emphasizes aligning a product or system to specific requirements.

In technology and product development, tillpasning means customization or configuration that makes a product usable for a given task or user group. This can involve selecting options, enabling accessibility features, or tailoring interfaces to local languages or regulatory environments. In manufacturing, it is linked to flexible production and mass customization, where goods are produced efficiently yet can still be adjusted to individual orders.

In ecology and biology, tillpasning refers to how organisms adjust traits or behaviors to local conditions, increasing fitness in a particular habitat. This can include physiological acclimation or behavioral changes within a lifetime, as opposed to genetic adaptation over generations.
