Tillidsmænd

Tillidsmænd, also known as works council representatives or employee representatives, are elected officials in Danish workplaces who act as a bridge between employees and management. The system is rooted in Denmark’s cooperative labor relations model, emphasizing dialogue, negotiation, and collective bargaining to resolve workplace issues.

The role of a tillidsmand is primarily to represent and protect the interests of employees within their respective workplaces. They are elected by their colleagues, typically through secret ballots, and serve a fixed term, usually three years. Tillidsmænd are granted legal protections, such as the right to time off work to fulfill their duties without losing pay, ensuring they can effectively carry out their responsibilities.

Their responsibilities include addressing grievances, negotiating working conditions, and advocating for fair treatment. They often collaborate with management on matters like wages, working hours, and workplace safety. In larger companies, tillidsmænd may work alongside works councils (*arbejdsmiljøudvalg*) to ensure compliance with labor laws and improve overall workplace conditions.

The tillidsmand system is part of Denmark’s strong tradition of labor rights and social partnership, fostering a culture of mutual respect between employers and employees. While not all workplaces have a tillidsmand, their presence is common in unionized sectors, where they play a key role in maintaining harmonious labor relations.
