Tilavuusmittausmenetelmät refers to the various techniques used to determine the volume of a substance or object. These methods can be broadly categorized into direct and indirect approaches. Direct methods involve physically measuring the dimensions of an object or filling a container with a liquid and measuring its volume. For solids, this might involve using rulers or calipers to measure length, width, and height, then applying geometric formulas. For liquids, direct measurement typically uses graduated cylinders, beakers, or volumetric flasks, which are calibrated to indicate specific volumes.

Indirect methods, on the other hand, rely on measuring other physical properties that are related to volume. One common indirect method is displacement. For irregularly shaped solids, the volume can be determined by submerging the object in a liquid and measuring the volume of liquid displaced. The displaced volume is equal to the volume of the submerged object. This principle is the basis of Archimedes' principle. For gases, volume can often be inferred from measurements of pressure, temperature, and the amount of gas, using gas laws such as the ideal gas law. Gravimetric methods, where mass is measured and density is known, can also be used to indirectly calculate volume, as volume equals mass divided by density. The choice of method depends on the state of the substance (solid, liquid, or gas), its shape, the required accuracy, and the available equipment.
