Tilatistas

The term "Tilatistas" refers to the followers or supporters of Álvaro Arzú Irigoyen during his political career in Guatemala, particularly his presidency from 1996 to 2000. The movement's name is derived from the Spanish word "tilata," a type of traditional indigenous textile. Arzú's political party was known as the National Advancement Party (PAN).

Tilatistas supported Arzú's platform, which focused on economic liberalization, modernization of the state, and a continuation of the peace process that aimed to end Guatemala's long-standing civil war. His presidency is often associated with the signing of the Peace Accords in December 1996, a landmark event in Guatemalan history. Supporters of Arzú believed in his pragmatic approach to governance and his efforts to integrate Guatemala into the global economy.

The movement was not a formal political organization with a defined ideology beyond support for Arzú himself. Its influence was largely tied to Arzú's personal popularity and his ability to rally a coalition of voters who sought stability and progress after decades of conflict. While Arzú's presidency had its successes, it also faced challenges, including corruption allegations and social unrest, which impacted the perception and longevity of the Tilatista movement.
