Tihedustestimist

Tihedustestimist is the process of determining the density of a material or product. It is used in engineering, construction, manufacturing, materials science and geology to characterize materials, ensure compliance with specifications, and compare materials. Densities can be described in several ways: true density, which is the mass per the actual solid volume; bulk density, the mass per total volume including open porosity; and, for some materials, apparent density, which depends on the testing method.

Common methods include Archimedes principle, where density is calculated from the mass divided by the volume determined by liquid displacement; geometric or displacement methods for regularly shaped samples; and pycnometry, using gas or liquid displacement to obtain true density. For porous materials, measurements may require controlled drying or moisture conditions to avoid distortion and to specify the porosity.

In soils and aggregates, bulk density and particle density are standard metrics, obtained via core, trench or laboratory methods, and the difference informs porosity and compaction. In polymers, metals and ceramics, true density is often the primary property, while bulk density matters for powder handling and packaging.

Standards and reporting: density tests are described by recognized standards from bodies such as ASTM International and ISO, and results depend on temperature, moisture, sample preparation and the chosen method, so method details are reported with the density value.
