Tietokoodaukseen, known in English as data encoding, is the process of converting data into a specific format for transmission, storage, or processing. This transformation is essential for ensuring that data can be reliably sent across networks, stored efficiently on various media, or processed by computer systems. Different encoding schemes exist to address various needs, such as error detection and correction, compression, or compatibility with different systems.

Common examples of data encoding include ASCII and Unicode for text characters, JPEG and PNG for images, and MP3 for audio. These formats define how the raw information, like the electrical signals representing a letter or the light values of a pixel, is represented as a sequence of binary digits (bits). The choice of encoding method can significantly impact the size of the data, the speed of transmission, and the robustness against errors.

Error detection and correction codes are a crucial aspect of data encoding, especially in environments where data corruption is a concern, such as wireless communication or long-term storage. Techniques like parity checks, Cyclic Redundancy Checks (CRC), and more advanced Forward Error Correction (FEC) codes add redundant information to the data, allowing the receiving end to identify and often fix errors without retransmission. Data compression, another form of encoding, aims to reduce the number of bits required to represent data, making storage and transmission more efficient by identifying and exploiting redundancies.
