Tidsdistribusjon

Tidsdistribusjon, or time distribution, refers to how events, durations, or measurements are spread over time within a process. It describes the temporal structure of data and informs forecasting, planning, and risk assessment by characterizing when and how often events occur.

In statistics and probability, the focus is on inter-arrival times and time-to-event distributions. Common models include the exponential distribution for memoryless waiting times, the gamma and Weibull distributions for various failure or waiting patterns, and the lognormal distribution for multiplicative effects. Renewal processes and Poisson processes provide frameworks for modeling arrivals that follow specific time patterns, with non-homogeneous Poisson processes allowing the rate to vary over time. For dependent events, processes such as Hawkes (self-exciting) models capture clustering in time.

Deterministic time distributions assume fixed intervals between events, while stochastic distributions accommodate variability. Time series with periodic or seasonal components account for regular temporal patterns, and autocorrelation measures capture dependence across time.

In reliability engineering, time-to-failure distributions guide maintenance and warranty planning. Epidemiology uses time-to-event analyses for infection or recovery timing. Data and estimation typically rely on timestamped events to derive inter-arrival times or dwell times, with methods such as maximum likelihood or Bayesian inference used to fit candidate distributions.
