Tidsdiskonteringsränta, or the time discount rate, is a concept used in economics and finance to represent the relative value of a good or service at a future point in time compared to its value today. Essentially, it is the rate at which individuals or organizations discount future values. This discounting occurs because future benefits are often perceived as less certain or desirable than present ones, due to factors like risk, impatience, or the opportunity cost of capital.

The time discount rate can be thought of as the interest rate at which a future sum of money is equivalent to a smaller present sum. For example, if someone has a time discount rate of 10%, they would value 100 SEK today as being equal to 110 SEK in one year. Conversely, 100 SEK received in one year would be worth approximately 90.91 SEK today (100 / 1.10).

This concept is crucial in various applications, including investment appraisal, cost-benefit analysis, and environmental economics. When evaluating long-term projects, a higher time discount rate will lead to a lower present value of future benefits, potentially making projects that are beneficial in the long run appear less attractive. Conversely, a lower time discount rate gives more weight to future outcomes. The choice of an appropriate time discount rate is often a subject of debate, as it can significantly influence policy decisions and economic forecasting.
