Thymelicus

Thymelicus is a genus of skippers, which are a subfamily of butterflies, commonly known as meadow browns or grizzled skippers. These small to medium-sized butterflies are characterized by their rapid, darting flight and their habit of resting with their wings held either open or closed. The genus Thymelicus is primarily found in Europe and Asia, with a few species extending into North Africa.

Members of the Thymelicus genus typically display brown or ochre coloration on their upper wings, often with subtle markings or variations. The underside of the wings is usually paler. A distinguishing feature of many male skippers, including those in the Thymelicus genus, is a brand or stigma, a dark, often elongated patch of scent scales on the forewing, which plays a role in courtship. The antennae are typically hooked at the tip.

These butterflies are commonly found in open, sunny habitats such as meadows, grasslands, and hedgerows. They are diurnal and actively fly during the day, feeding on nectar from a variety of flowering plants. The larval stage, or caterpillar, of Thymelicus species usually feeds on grasses. The exact host plants vary depending on the specific species within the genus. Reproduction involves males establishing territories and displaying to females, with mating occurring in suitable locations. The genus includes several species, such as Thymelicus lineola (European Skipper) and Thymelicus sylvestris (Large Skipper), each with its own distribution and ecological niche.
