Thorakolumbalübergang

Thorakolumbalübergang refers to the anatomical region where the thoracic spine transitions into the lumbar spine. This area, also known as the thoracolumbar junction, is located roughly between the 11th thoracic vertebra and the 2nd lumbar vertebra. It represents a critical biomechanical zone due to its role in supporting the upper body and facilitating movement.

This region is subjected to significant forces during activities such as lifting, bending, and twisting. Anatomically, the vertebrae in this area have distinct characteristics. The thoracic vertebrae are typically characterized by their connection to the ribs, while the lumbar vertebrae are larger and more robust to bear greater weight. The thoracolumbar junction exhibits features that blend these characteristics.

Injuries to the thoracolumbar junction can be common, often resulting from trauma, falls, or heavy lifting. These injuries can range from sprains and strains of the ligaments and muscles to more severe fractures of the vertebrae or damage to the spinal cord. Due to the concentration of stress in this area, pain and dysfunction are frequently reported. Diagnostic imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRI are used to assess the extent of any injury. Treatment approaches vary depending on the severity of the condition and may include conservative measures like rest and physical therapy, or surgical intervention for more serious cases.
