Thong

In footwear, a thong refers to a type of sandal characterized by a thin strap that passes between the toes and attaches to a flat sole. The strap often forms a Y or T shape and can be made from rubber, plastic, leather, or fabric. Thong sandals are common in warm climates and are produced in casual, fashion-oriented, and sport-oriented varieties.

Etymology and regional usage reflect the two senses. The word thong originally described a narrow strip or strap of material and was later applied to both the underwear style and the toe-between-the-toe strap design seen in sandals. In American English, thong most commonly refers to the underwear, whereas in other varieties of English, thong more often denotes the sandal style. Both senses describe minimalist designs that rely on narrow strips of material to achieve their respective fits.
