Thinsulate

Thinsulate is a brand of synthetic insulation manufactured by 3M. First introduced in 1979, it was designed to provide warmth with less bulk than many traditional insulations and has since become a common feature in winter clothing, footwear, gloves, and other protective garments.

The insulation relies on ultrafine microfibers that trap air to reduce heat transfer. The high surface area of these fibers creates numerous tiny air pockets, which helps retain body heat while maintaining a thin, light profile. Thinsulate products are made from synthetic polymers and are offered in a range of thicknesses, often described by grams per square meter (gsm).

Product lines include standard Thinsulate and higher-performance variants such as Thinsulate Ultra. These variants are differentiated by gsm ratings to suit different climates and activities, from lighter liners to substantial warmth for extreme cold. The material is chosen for its ability to insulate when dry or damp and for its quick-drying characteristics compared with some natural fibers.

Applications and care: Thinsulate insulation is used in jackets, vests, gloves, mittens, boots, and other outdoor gear, as well as some industrial protective garments. Many items featuring Thinsulate are machine-washable, but care instructions vary by product and should be followed to preserve loft and insulation performance.
