Theurgia is a term derived from Greek, meaning "divine work" or "work of the gods." In ancient philosophical and religious contexts, it referred to practices aimed at invoking divine beings or achieving union with the divine. These practices were often associated with Neoplatonism, particularly during the Roman Empire.

Theurgists sought to purify themselves and perform rituals that they believed would bridge the gap between the human and the divine realms. This could involve prayers, incantations, ceremonies, and the use of symbolic objects or gestures. The goal was not simply to gain favor from deities but to attain a spiritual elevation, enlightenment, or even a form of ecstatic union.

Key figures associated with Theurgia include Iamblichus, who elaborated on its principles and practices in his work "On the Mysteries." He distinguished Theurgia from mere magic, emphasizing its divine and salvific purpose. Theurgy was seen as a path to true knowledge and a means of realizing one's divine potential.

While sometimes intertwined with magical practices, Theurgia was conceptually distinct for its proponents, focusing on spiritual ascent and communion rather than manipulative control. The concept has seen revivals and reinterpretations in various esoteric traditions throughout history.
