One common application of thermalsensitive materials is in temperature sensing. For instance, thermistors are resistors whose resistance changes predictably with temperature, allowing them to be used in thermometers and other monitoring systems. Bimetallic strips, composed of two metals with different coefficients of thermal expansion, bend when heated or cooled, forming the basis of some thermostats and thermal switches.

Color-changing materials, often referred to as thermochromic substances, are another example. These materials can change from one color to another or become transparent as their temperature crosses a specific threshold. This property is utilized in novelty items, temperature indicators on packaging, and even in specialized inks and dyes.
