In everyday medical usage, the expression is not a fixed term in standard dictionaries, and its meaning may vary depending on the context. More precise terms such as Behandlungsleitung (treatment management), Therapiekonzept (therapy concept), Behandlungsplan (treatment plan), or Therapiekoordination are often preferred to describe the same ideas.

In clinical care, Therapieleitung refers to the process of planning, directing, and reviewing a patient’s therapy. This includes choosing appropriate interventions, coordinating among physicians, nurses, therapists, and other professionals, and ensuring documentation, communication, and continuity of care. The aim is to align interventions with evidence-based guidelines, patient goals, and safety requirements, while continuously monitoring outcomes and adjusting the plan as needed. Interprofessional collaboration and patient involvement are typically emphasized components of effective Therapieleitung.

In mental health, rehabilitation, or palliative care, the term may appear in reference to the overall direction of a therapy program or pathway, including case management, monitoring of symptom control, and coordination of services across settings.

The term can be confused with a physical delivery line in infusion therapy. For intravenous treatment, standard terms are Infusionsleitung or Infusionsschlauch, with Therapieleitung used only in a broader or non-technical sense.
