Tetramorium

Tetramorium is a large and diverse genus of ants belonging to the subfamily Myrmicinae. These ants are commonly known as pavement ants or tetramorium ants. The genus is found throughout the world, with a significant number of species in tropical and subtropical regions. Tetramorium ants are typically small to medium-sized, with colonies that can range from a few hundred to many thousands of individuals.

Morphologically, Tetramorium ants are characterized by their distinct petiole and postpetiole, which are usually nodiform. They possess a twelve-segmented antenna, and their mandibles have five to six teeth. Coloration varies widely among species, but they are often reddish-brown to black. Some species, like Tetramorium immigrans, have become invasive in many parts of the world, establishing large colonies in urban and suburban environments.

These ants are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of substances including insects, honeydew, seeds, and human food scraps. They are often considered pests due to their tendency to forage indoors for food and their ability to nest in buildings. Despite their pest status in some areas, Tetramorium ants play an important role in their ecosystems, contributing to soil aeration and nutrient cycling. Their social structure is typical of ants, with a queen responsible for reproduction and workers performing tasks such as foraging, nest maintenance, and brood care.
