Teststemperature

Teststemperature is not a widely recognized scientific term. In practice, it is most often found as a variable name or descriptor in experimental protocols and data sets that involve testing stems—either plant stems or stem-like materials such as wood specimens or synthetic composites. When used, it refers to the temperature applied to the sample during the test, not to a specific natural temperature readout. Because it is not standardized, its exact meaning depends on the protocol: one study might use teststemperature to denote the temperature inside an environmental chamber during a stem hydration test, while another might record the temperature of a water bath used to heat or cool stem samples.

Measurement and control: Teststemperature is usually measured in degrees Celsius (°C) or sometimes Fahrenheit. It is controlled via climate chambers, incubators, water baths, or thermal rigs, and may be held constant or varied according to a predefined schedule (ramp or step changes).

Relevance: The applied temperature can influence physiological processes such as enzyme activity and respiration in living stems, or mechanical properties and viscoelastic behavior in non-living stem materials. Researchers report teststemperature alongside other variables like humidity, light, duration, and load.

Data handling: In data records, teststemperature is stored as a numeric field with units, and must be defined in methods to ensure reproducibility. If used, it should be reported with calibration details and the method of temperature measurement.
