Testisivustot

Testisivustot, also known as testicular torsion, is a medical condition characterized by the twisting of one or both testicles, which can lead to a reduction in blood flow to the affected testicle. This condition is most commonly seen in young males, typically between the ages of 12 and 25, and is more prevalent in those with undescended testicles or those who have undergone orchiopexy (surgical correction of undescended testicles). The exact cause of testicular torsion is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to the twisting of the spermatic cord, which contains the testicle, blood vessels, and nerves.

The symptoms of testicular torsion can vary but often include sudden, severe pain in the affected testicle, which may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and a feeling of fullness in the scrotum. In some cases, the pain may be so severe that it mimics an appendicitis attack, leading to a delay in diagnosis and treatment. If left untreated, testicular torsion can lead to testicular infarction (death of tissue due to lack of blood supply), which can result in infertility, pain, and a significant decrease in quality of life.

The diagnosis of testicular torsion is typically made through a physical examination, where the affected testicle may appear swollen, tender, and discolored. Imaging studies such as ultrasound or CT scan may also be used to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for testicular torsion usually involves surgical intervention, known as orchiopexy, to untwist the testicle and restore blood flow. In some cases, the affected testicle may need to be removed if significant damage has occurred.

Prevention of testicular torsion is challenging, as the exact cause is not fully understood. However, maintaining good genital hygiene, avoiding excessive force or trauma to the scrotum, and being aware of the symptoms can help in early detection and treatment. Regular check-ups and self-examinations can also aid in the early identification of any abnormalities.
