The core of Testdesignet is the creation of a test design artifact—often a document or plan—that specifies the objectives, scope, and acceptance criteria for testing, as well as the items to be tested, the test environment, and the data and tools required. It defines the chosen test techniques and approaches, such as equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis, decision tables, state transition testing, or use-case testing, and it outlines how test cases will be derived, organized, and traced back to requirements. It also covers risk-based prioritization, coverage criteria, and defect reporting and resolution processes.

Within the software testing lifecycle, Testdesignet informs subsequent test execution and evaluation. It is typically produced by QA engineers or test designers, sometimes in collaboration with product managers, developers, and validation specialists. Terminology varies by organization; some sources use Testdesign or Testfalldesign as synonyms or to denote the overall test design activity rather than a specific document.
