Terminationsrecycling is a term used to describe the recycling of termination-related components used to terminate electrical cables and signal lines, including connector blocks, termination units, terminations for coaxial and fiber optic cables, and associated hardware. The concept fits within the broader framework of e-waste recycling and the circular economy, emphasizing resource recovery and reduced environmental impact.

The practice involves collecting end-of-life terminations from telecommunications networks, data centers, and industrial electrical installations, followed by disassembly to separate housings, conductors, and termination elements. Sorting by material and function enables downstream processing: copper and aluminum conductors are recovered, plastics are recycled or baled, and metal alloys or rare-earth ferrites may be recovered where present. Advanced facilities use shredders, magnets, eddy current separators, and optical sorters to increase material purity.

Recovered materials can feed back into manufacturing of new terminations or other products, lowering virgin material demand and reducing energy use and emissions. Compliance with environmental standards and hazardous material controls is essential, as older terminations may contain lead, cadmium, flame retardants, or asbestos-containing components.

Challenges include ensuring economic viability, variable composition of terminations, contamination with oils or coatings, and the need for standardized dismantling and labeling to enable efficient recycling. Regulation, producer responsibility schemes, and market prices for recovered metals heavily influence operation viability. Beneficial applications span telecom build-outs, data centers, and industrial power systems.
