Terhességdatálás is the process of determining the gestational age of a pregnancy. This is crucial for monitoring fetal development, scheduling prenatal care, and estimating the delivery date. There are several common methods used for terhességdatálás.

The most widely used method is based on the last menstrual period (LMP). This calculation assumes a standard 28-day menstrual cycle with ovulation occurring around day 14. The gestational age is then calculated as the number of weeks and days from the first day of the LMP. This method is simple and often the initial basis for dating a pregnancy.

Another important method is ultrasound dating. An early ultrasound, typically performed in the first trimester, can provide a more precise estimate of gestational age. The size of the embryo or fetus, specifically measurements like the crown-rump length (CRL), is compared to established growth charts. Ultrasound dating is considered more accurate than LMP dating, especially if the menstrual cycles are irregular or the LMP is uncertain.
