Teoriakokeen

Teoriakokeen is the theory test used in Finland as part of obtaining a driving license. The test is administered by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) in cooperation with licensing authorities and is delivered electronically at designated examination centers and, in some cases, online. It is designed to assess a candidate’s knowledge of traffic rules, road signs, and safe driving practices, as well as basic knowledge relevant to vehicle operation and road safety.

The examination consists of multiple-choice questions presented within a fixed time limit. A passing score is required to qualify for the next step in the licensing process, which is the practical driving test. Results are typically provided immediately after completing the test or within a short period.

Content coverage includes general traffic regulations, road signs, and safe driving principles, along with topics such as first aid and considerations for vulnerable road users. The test is intended to be applicable across license classes, with some variations in content depending on whether the applicant seeks a car, motorcycle, truck, or bus license.

Eligibility to take teoriakokeen is determined by the licensing authority and generally involves age and identity requirements, with the option to choose among several languages in which the exam is available. Preparation is supported by official study materials, practice tests, and resources from driving schools.

Candidates who pass teoriakokeen gain eligibility to schedule and undertake the practical driving test. If the test is failed, retakes are allowed according to official rules, which may include waiting periods and limits on the number of attempts.
