Tenía

Tenía is the imperfect indicative form of the Spanish verb tener in the first and third person singular. It corresponds to “yo tenía” and “él/ella/usted tenía.” While tener generally means to possess, as a past-tense form ten­ía is used to describe past states, ongoing conditions, or habitual actions.

Uses include describing possession or states in the past, such as “Cuando era niño, tenía un perro” or “Tenía diez años.” It also expresses habitual or background information, for example, “Antes tenía miedo a la oscuridad.” In combination with other verb phrases, ten­ía appears in expressions like “tener que” to indicate obligation in the past (tenía que estudiar) or “tener ganas de” to express desire (tenía ganas de comer).

Grammatically, ten­ía is formed from the stem ten- plus the imperfect endings -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían. Thus yo tenía, tú tenías (note the different subject form), él tenía, nosotros teníamos, vosotros teníais, ellos tenían.

Distinction with the preterite: the imperfect ten­ía describes ongoing or repeated past situations, while the preterite tuvo or tuve denotes a completed, single event or a definite moment of possession. For example, “Tenía un coche nuevo” (I had a new car for a period) versus “Tuve un coche nuevo el año pasado” (I had a new car last year).
