Tenasserim

Tenasserim is a historical region encompassing parts of modern-day Myanmar and Thailand. It was a kingdom situated in the southern part of Myanmar, extending from the border with India in the east to the Andaman Sea in the west. The Tenasserim region is generally understood to be a narrow strip of land that borders the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea in the southwest of Myanmar.

The region's borders formed a geographical buffer zone between British and Burmese territories during the colonial era. In 1826, the Treaty of Yandabo led to the annexation of the Tenasserim region by the British, which in turn led to its reorganization into the Tenasserim Province. The province was eventually divided into the provinces of Tenasserim and Moulmein in 1832.

Historically, the Tenasserim region was home to numerous ethnic groups, including the Kobby, who referred to themselves as the "Karens of Tenasserim". These groups maintained a diverse set of languages and cultures in the area. During the second Anglo-Burmese War, British rule was extended to the region as a result of the signing of the Treaty of Yandabo.

Today, Tenasserim can be seen as a historical relic, with the region's territorial integrity influenced by successive empires and powers. The availability of Pali inscriptions of seventh century has helped researchers in tracing the roots of its early Buddhist cognition. The remnants of this past are today being identified and researched with the aim of shedding light on the historical heritage and place of this narrow and strategic geographical strip.
