In urban planning, theme areas cluster activities, architecture, and public space around a unifying idea such as culture, gastronomy, or sustainability. Design guidelines may address street layout, building form, materials, signage, and wayfinding to reinforce the theme and improve navigability. Branding and economic strategy often accompany proposals to attract visitors and investment.

In tourism and events, theme areas provide immersive environments within a city, park, festival, or exhibition. Visitors encounter consistent signage, lighting, and programming in each zone, enabling easy orientation and themed itineraries.
