Teleosaurus

Teleosaurus is an extinct genus of thalattosuchian crocodyliform. It lived during the Middle Jurassic period, approximately 160 million years ago. Teleosaurus fossils have been found in Europe, primarily in France and England.

The appearance of Teleosaurus is inferred from its skeletal remains. It was a relatively small marine crocodile, with an estimated length of around 3 meters (10 feet). Its body was streamlined, adapted for life in the sea. It possessed long jaws filled with conical teeth, suggesting a diet of fish and other marine invertebrates. Unlike modern crocodiles, Teleosaurus had nostrils positioned further back on its skull. Its limbs were likely more paddle-like than those of terrestrial crocodiles, aiding in swimming. The tail was probably a powerful organ for propulsion.

Teleosaurus belonged to the family Teleosauridae, a group of exclusively marine or brackish water crocodiles. These animals were part of the diverse marine ecosystems of the Jurassic. Their presence indicates a successful adaptation of the crocodylomorph lineage to aquatic environments long before the rise of the large marine reptiles like ichthyosaurs and pliosaurs. The exact ecological role of Teleosaurus is debated, but it was likely a mid-level predator within its environment. The discovery of Teleosaurus has been crucial in understanding the evolutionary history of crocodiles and their transition to marine life.
