Telefennettet

Telefennettet is a term used in several Nordic languages to denote the public telephone network, the system of facilities that enables voice and related data communications between subscriber equipment. It encompasses the public switched telephone network (PSTN) as well as mobile networks, fixed and wireless access networks, and the interconnecting backbone that links regional exchanges to national and international networks.

The network consists of multiple layers: local access networks that reach homes and businesses; switching nodes such as local and tandem exchanges; the core and backbone transport networks; and customer premises equipment. The signaling network coordinates call setup, routing, charging, and features, historically via SS7 and increasingly through IP-based signaling in all-IP architectures.

Historically, telefennettet evolved from manual, operator-assisted circuits to automatic electromechanical and then digital switches, followed by the transition to packet-based transmission and voice over IP. The mobile dimension added radio access networks, with generations from GSM/2G to 5G in recent years. International connections rely on submarine and terrestrial cables, satellite links, and peering arrangements.

Today many networks are converging toward all-IP architectures. VoIP, SIP, and IP Multimedia Subsystem enable voice and multimedia services over the same infrastructure used for data. Regulation, interconnection agreements, and universal service obligations shape access, pricing, and quality.

Security and resilience are central concerns: encryption, lawful intercept capabilities, protection against fraud, and measures for redundancy and disaster recovery. Ongoing challenges include modernizing aging infrastructure, expanding fiber and wireless coverage, safeguarding privacy, and maintaining reliable emergency services.
