Teksttraditie is the transmission of a written work through successive copies, translations, and editions over time and across communities. It encompasses the collection of textual witnesses that scholars consult to understand how a text has been preserved and altered, including manuscripts, early printed editions, translations, and paraphrases. The transmission is rarely stable; variations arise from copying errors, scribal practices, glosses, and intentional edits, as well as regional or political censorship.

In philology and literary studies, the study of teksttraditie employs textual criticism to reconstruct the most credible form of the original text. Two broad approaches are used: stemmatics, which tries to deduce a family tree of manuscripts and their relationships, and eclectic methods, which compare witnesses to assemble a "best" text. Authors often lack their autograph text, making the reconstruction an interpretive task rather than a definitive restoration.

The field covers many domains, including classical literature, biblical and religious texts, and modern national canons. It also differentiates between the "text" as a potential original and the "edition" that presents a selected form for readers. In practice, editors disclose variants and provide apparatuses to show how the text diverges across witnesses.
