Tekstsortering, often translated as text sorting, refers to the process of arranging text data into a predefined order. This ordering can be based on various criteria, such as alphabetical order, numerical value, chronological sequence, or custom defined rules. In computing, text sorting is a fundamental operation used in numerous applications, from organizing files in a directory to preparing data for analysis.

The most common form of text sorting is alphabetical, where strings are arranged according to the sequence of characters in a given alphabet. This can be case-sensitive, meaning 'A' comes before 'a', or case-insensitive, where they are treated as equivalent for sorting purposes. Numerical sorting within text involves treating numbers embedded in strings as their actual numerical values rather than as sequences of characters. For instance, "file10.txt" would typically come after "file2.txt" in numerical sorting, whereas in pure alphabetical sorting, it might precede it.

Chronological sorting is used for dates and times, ensuring that events are listed in the order they occurred. This requires parsing date and time formats correctly. Custom sorting allows users to define specific rules, which might involve prioritizing certain keywords, ignoring specific characters, or using a locale-specific ordering convention. The efficiency and algorithm used for text sorting can significantly impact performance, especially when dealing with large datasets. Common algorithms include bubble sort, merge sort, and quicksort, each with its own time and space complexity.
