Tekstiilifibrojen

Tekstiilifibrojen is the Finnish term for textile fibers. These are the fundamental building blocks of all fabrics and textiles. Textile fibers can be broadly categorized into two main groups: natural fibers and man-made fibers.

Natural fibers are derived from plants or animals. Plant-based fibers include cotton, linen (flax), hemp, and jute, which are obtained from the seeds, stems, or leaves of plants. Animal-based fibers, on the other hand, are produced by animals, such as wool from sheep, silk from silkworms, and cashmere or mohair from goats. Natural fibers are known for their breathability, absorbency, and biodegradability.

Man-made fibers, also known as synthetic or artificial fibers, are manufactured through chemical processes. These can be further divided into regenerated cellulosic fibers, like rayon (viscose), modal, and lyocell, which are made from wood pulp, and fully synthetic fibers, such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, and spandex. Man-made fibers often possess properties like durability, wrinkle resistance, elasticity, and water repellency, which can be tailored during their production.

The choice of textile fiber significantly impacts the properties of the resulting fabric, including its texture, drape, strength, insulation, and care requirements. Blending different types of fibers is also common to combine their desirable characteristics and create fabrics with enhanced performance or aesthetic qualities. The study and application of textile fibers are crucial in the textile industry, influencing everything from clothing and home furnishings to industrial textiles.
