Tegumises

Tegumises are traditional, lightweight, and versatile outer garments originating from the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America, particularly among the Tlingit, Haida, and other coastal tribes. The term "tegumise" is derived from the Tlingit language, where it refers to a type of cloak or cape made from woven cedar bark or, in later adaptations, synthetic materials. These garments were historically crafted using natural resources available in the region, such as cedar bark, which was split, boiled, and woven into a durable yet flexible fabric.

Tegumises served multiple practical and cultural purposes. They were designed to be worn over other clothing, providing warmth and protection against the region’s damp and cold coastal climate. Their lightweight yet insulating properties made them ideal for both everyday wear and ceremonial occasions. Additionally, tegumises often featured intricate patterns, embroidery, or beadwork, reflecting the wearer’s social status, lineage, or achievements. These decorative elements were created using natural dyes and materials like abalone shell, copper, and porcupine quills.

Over time, tegumises evolved alongside cultural exchanges and adaptations. While historically made from cedar bark, modern versions frequently incorporate synthetic fabrics for durability and ease of production. Contemporary tegumises are still worn during cultural events, festivals, and as a symbol of heritage, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design.
