Modern networks use intelligent transport systems (ITS), data from sensors and cameras, and GIS-based management to optimize capacity, reduce delays, and monitor conditions. Data-driven approaches support scheduling, prioritization, and alerting.

Impact includes accessibility and social equity, economic competitiveness, and resilience to weather and climate events. Challenges include aging infrastructure, funding limitations, urban congestion, and the need to integrate with public transit, cycling, and walking networks for sustainable mobility.
