Teadusalad

Teadusalad are the thematic divisions used to categorize knowledge, research activity, and education within science and scholarship. The term denotes the domains or disciplines that share subject matter, methods, and aims, and it provides a framework for organizing universities, research institutes, curricula, and funding decisions.

Typical teadusalad are grouped into broad categories such as natural sciences (including biology, chemistry, physics, earth and environmental sciences), formal sciences (mathematics, statistics, logic, computer science), engineering and technology, medical and health sciences, agricultural sciences, social sciences (psychology, sociology, political science, economics), and humanities (philosophy, history, linguistics, literature, arts). Subfields and specializations exist within each area, and interdisciplinary and emerging fields such as environmental science, data science, cognitive science, and bioinformatics often span multiple teadusalad. The boundaries are fluid and evolve with research frontiers and policy priorities.

Teadusalad guide research planning, funding, and assessment, and they help structure higher education curricula and degree programs. They enable researchers to identify peers, publish in appropriate journals, and align national or institutional strategies with international classifications of science and technology.

In Estonia and many other countries, teadusalad are used in research policy to classify projects, allocate resources, and report on scientific activity. They serve as a common vocabulary for researchers, universities, funding agencies, and policymakers.
