Tawheed

Tawhid is the central and most fundamental concept in Islam. It refers to the absolute oneness of God, Allah. This concept encompasses the belief that there is only one God, who is indivisible, unique, and has no partners, equals, or associates. Muslims believe that Tawhid is the sole purpose of creation and the reason for sending prophets.

There are generally considered to be three main aspects of Tawhid. Tawhid al-Rububiyyah is the belief in God's Lordship, acknowledging Him as the sole Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of the universe. Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah, also known as Tawhid al-Ibadah, is the belief in God's sole right to be worshipped. This means that all acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, supplication, and sacrifice, must be directed solely to Allah. The third aspect is Tawhid al-Asma wa al-Sifat, which is the belief in God's unique names and attributes as they are described in the Quran and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad. This involves affirming God's attributes without distortion, denial, or likening them to those of creation.

The negation of Tawhid is Shirk, which is the association of partners with God. Shirk is considered the gravest sin in Islam. The declaration of faith, the Shahada, which states "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger," is the embodiment of Tawhid. It serves as the foundation of a Muslim's belief and practice. Understanding and adhering to Tawhid is essential for all Muslims.
