Tavujärjestelmän, also known as the byte system, refers to the fundamental way digital information is structured and processed within computers. It is based on the concept of a byte, which is a group of bits, typically eight bits. Each bit represents a binary digit, either a 0 or a 1. Therefore, a byte can represent 256 different values (2 to the power of 8).

This byte-oriented organization is crucial for how data is stored, transmitted, and interpreted. For example, text characters are often represented using character encoding schemes like ASCII or Unicode, where each character is assigned a specific byte or sequence of bytes. Similarly, numbers, images, and other forms of digital data are ultimately broken down into bytes for computer manipulation.

The tavujärjestelmän dictates how memory is addressed and how data is moved between different components of a computer system. Processors read and write data in chunks that are multiples of bytes, such as words, which can be two, four, or even eight bytes long, depending on the processor's architecture.
