Historically, Tauton was part of the ancient hundred of Hoxne and has been recorded in documents dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as *Totenone*. The name likely derives from Old English elements meaning "Tota’s settlement" or "Tota’s people," though the exact origin remains uncertain. The village has a long agricultural heritage, with farming remaining a significant part of its economy.
