Hoxne

Hoxne is a village and civil parish in Suffolk, England. It is a rural community that sits within the East of England region, known for its long history of occupation dating back to prehistory.

The village is notable for major archaeological finds associated with its vicinity. In 1992, a field near Hoxne yielded the Hoxne Hoard, a large late Roman metalwork hoard that includes gold and silver objects as well as thousands of coins dating to the 3rd and 4th centuries. The hoard is considered one of the most important Roman finds in Britain and is now housed in the British Museum, where it has contributed to understanding of late Roman Britain and daily life in the period.

In addition to the Roman finds, Hoxne is linked to the Hoxne Handaxe, a prehistoric stone tool discovered nearby. Dating to roughly 400,000 years ago, the handaxe is one of the oldest known artefacts found in Britain and provides evidence of early human activity in the region.

Today, Hoxne remains a small rural parish with agricultural surroundings and a parish church. The village’s archaeological associations contribute to its cultural significance, attracting researchers and visitors interested in Britain’s distant past.
