Tauganúðskurðinn, also known as tauganúðastoppun or neuromythotomy, refers to a surgical procedure that was historically performed on individuals with certain neurological or psychiatric conditions. The practice, largely discredited and abandoned, involved severing specific nerve fibers in the brain or spinal cord with the aim of alleviating symptoms. Early proponents believed that by disrupting abnormal nerve pathways, they could treat conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy, and mental illnesses like depression and schizophrenia.
