Taugabóðefni
Taugabóðefni are chemical messengers that transmit signals across a synapse from one neuron to another. This process is crucial for communication within the nervous system, enabling everything from basic reflexes to complex thought processes. When an electrical impulse reaches the end of a neuron, known as the axon terminal, it triggers the release of taugabóðefni into the synaptic cleft, the small gap between neurons. These molecules then diffuse across the cleft and bind to specific receptors on the surface of the next neuron, the postsynaptic neuron.
