Taudinlevittäjinä, often translated as "disease vectors" in English, refers to organisms that transmit pathogenic microorganisms or parasites from one host to another. These vectors play a crucial role in the epidemiology of many infectious diseases. They are typically arthropods such as insects and ticks, but can also include other animals.

The process of disease transmission by a vector involves several stages. The vector must first acquire the pathogen by feeding on an infected host. Once inside the vector, the pathogen may undergo a period of development or replication, known as the extrinsic incubation period. The vector then becomes capable of transmitting the pathogen to a new, susceptible host, usually through a bite or by contaminating the host's skin or mucous membranes with infectious material.

Common examples of disease vectors include mosquitoes, which transmit diseases like malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus. Ticks are vectors for Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and tick-borne encephalitis. Fleas can carry the plague bacterium, and flies can spread various gastrointestinal pathogens. Understanding the biology and behavior of these vectors is essential for developing effective control strategies and preventing disease outbreaks. Public health efforts often focus on vector control through measures such as insecticide application, habitat modification, and the use of personal protective measures like insect repellent.
