Tashriq

Tashriq refers to a specific period in the Islamic calendar, occurring immediately after Eid al-Adha. It spans the 11th, 12th, and 13th days of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar year. These days are considered an extension of the Hajj pilgrimage and are also known as the Days of Tashriq.

During Tashriq, pilgrims in Mina continue to perform rituals related to Hajj, including the stoning of the Jamarat (pillars representing the devil). For Muslims not performing Hajj, these days hold significance as they are days of eating and drinking. It is generally forbidden to fast on these days, as they are considered days of celebration and remembrance of God. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have forbidden fasting on the days of Tashriq.

The word "Tashriq" itself is derived from the Arabic root meaning "to spread out meat to dry in the sun," which was a common practice during these days to preserve the meat from the Qurbani (sacrifice) performed on Eid al-Adha. This practice highlights the celebratory and communal aspect of these days, where families and communities share the blessings of the sacrifice. It is a time for Muslims to reflect on the lessons of Hajj, express gratitude for God's blessings, and continue the spirit of devotion.
